I would not recommend it unless you have specific need to update/add specific packages. We do use custom kernel and associated python libs that will break if you do a generic update.
We do updates in our "major" releases: 1.4 will update Ubuntu to 16.04.2 from 16.04.1 as well as minor kernel updates.
