Although the system is open so you can install any Ubuntu tools, everything has limits, we do not expect you to change the kernel or system libraries or anything that deals with core storage like iSCSI etc. So as with anything please do exercise caution. You can do apt-get update but not at-get upgrade. Note that the PetaSAN installer will upgrade existing system with newest system libraries/kernel, so you should not have to do this.
