Some notes:
Ceph is designed to work with JBOD rather than RAID. Many Ceph users will not even use RAID 1 for the system disk and accept a node going down due to system disk failure, the node is out but the Ceph cluster is running. They can re-install a new node quickly and plug the data disks to it or plug them in other nodes and they will be picked up and used automatically. Even If they do not re-use the data disks or replace the node, Ceph will re-create their replicas in the background with its automated self heal process ( of course it will use more traffic this way ). This is specially true for large clusters, but for a small cluster it may be better to use RAID 1 on the system disk if you have a RAID controller.
It terms of performance, the more data disks Ceph sees ( OSDs ) the better.
