Kernel questions

Hi!

Sorry if this is a double post, I've seen it been discussed before but I just want to get clarification.

I currently have a Ceph cluster (mimic) running on Ubuntu 18 and I would like to implement the PetaSAN iSCSI for vmware. My question do is if it is safe to run iSCSI active/active or do OSD:s also need the "special" kernel? Or is it enough for the iSCSI gateways to have it.

Thanks

the kernel is for the iSCSI gateway, the OSDs can have a standard kernel. However PetaSAN is designed to work as an integrated system so setting up a PetaSAN gateway to work on an existing Ceph cluster is not something we have done,  the reverse is actually quite easy where you can use PetaSAN to store OpenStack vms and so on, also if you are able to set it up, you may loose some of the extra features we add but it may work out.

Thanks for quick reply!

Yes, I've tested it and got it working in dev-environment, I just wanted to make sure (if) we deploy in production we don't get corrupted data. I understand it's not normal but our Ceph is currently running mimic (looking into upgrading to nautilus) and from what I understand PetaSAN is luminous. How does the development cycle look for PetaSAN? Also curious how the upgrading process for PetaSAN work?

Cheers!

We will be adding a lot of features in PetaSAN, next release we add asyn replication, it is due very soon.  It will use Luminous 12.2.11. We tend to not use the very latest Ceph releases since early releases tend to have issues, many do this for example Red Hat most recent Ceph Storage 3,2 released end of Jan. is based on Luminous 12.2.8. We ate currently testing Mimic 13.2.5.

We currently rely on point releases, the installer will detect your existing version and will do the upgrade itself in automated way.
