Server with Raid or JBOD?

Hi!

Iam new to this forum and i was wondering how the preferred way is to connect the disks to the server. What is the best way to do this?

I was thinking to plan a PetaSAN Test project with 2 HPE DL360e Gen8 Server and 4 10Gbit Ethernetcards each. I will use around 6 SSDs with 1TB each.

How should i configurate them on the Controller? Raid 10? Or just JBOD.
Does PetaSAN do the Raid?

Thx

It is better to use JBOD and let the system handle separate disks itself, the more disks it sees the better.

The exception to JBOD, is if you have HDDs and your controller supports write back cache with bbu, you can enable controller cache and may need to create single volume raid-0 disks to support cache. But again you should give the system all the disks individually for best performance.

Thx for the answer!

And what if a disk fails? How does PetaSAN handle this?

The system will re-create all data replicas that were on this disk onto other disks. so it does auto recovery.

Thx. I plan to use 128Gb SSD for System Disk. Should i use 2 of them in Raid 1?

It is not a must but generally a good idea for the OS
