please have the system keep the contents of /etc/modules intact accross update/upgrades. This file is for loading important drivers that are not in the auto-load group, which get wiped and replaced on upgrades anyway.

This should not have happened but could be due to updating the systemd package from the Ububtu repository. It is better to define these modules in
/etc/modules-load.d/*.conf
